Multi-family building in Sofia

In 2003, Habitat Bulgaria launched its first housing project in the Slatina district of Sofia. Construction lasted for about two years with the help of numerous volunteer teams from Bulgaria and abroad – including the American University in Bulgaria (AUB), the International Women’s Club – Sofia, Habitat for Humanity Romania, the Peace Corps – Bulgaria and others.
Families who have undergone a long selection process are also actively involved in the work.
The building, which has 8 apartments, was completed in 2005. It accommodates 8 families with a total of 19 children. Due to voluntary work and donated materials and resources, ready-made homes of very low cost and in accordance with the policies of Habitat Bulgaria and Habitat for Humanity International are provided to families for an amount equal to their cost and without accrual of profit or interest.
Future homeowners are given the opportunity to pay for their homes in small installments over a 20-year period.
